He kept an eye on his widowed wife and house for twenty years. After that, he surprises his wife by his reappearance.

Tales and Sketches which explains how Young Goodman Brown was cruel to his wife Faith. Brown bid his wife goodbye as he was leaving for a journey. His wife was sensing danger and she tried to convince him not to leave. As Brown returns, he starts mistreating his wife. This a book on Rip Van Winkle who was loved by the people of his village, especially the children.
